Semestered Course for Schools
(24 half hour sessions
)
The GuitarSmart! semestered
course is a 3 month introduction to the guitar and music theory as it
applies to the instrument. The following basic theoretical concepts are
covered:
- steps and half steps (tones
& semitones)
- the music alphabet in the
key of C
- the notes on the staff
in the key of C
- quarter note, half note,
and whole note rhythms
In addition to theoretical
concepts, guitar-specific knowledge is also addressed including:
- naming parts of the guitar
- proper posture and playing
technique
- notes and chords on the
guitar
Performance practice is the primary focus of the course and the following
ideas are explored through its development:
- performing an entire piece
- knowing ones role in an ensemble - working with a group
- performing in front of an audience

5 - 90 minute sessions
Contemporary Fingerstyle Guitar
Learn the intricacies of controlling your right hand in this intensive
week-long course. Topics covered are:
- Relaxation of the Right Hand
- Tone and Volume Control
- Developing Control and Flexibility in the Right Hand
- Creating Chord Accompaniments with Fingerstyle
- Advanced Techniques - Percussion/Ambidexterity

GuitarSmart!
for Adults
GuitarSmart also offers group sessions for adults who are interested
in learning the basics of guitar but don't have the time to commit to
private lessons. Weekly one hour sessions provide practice time and a
collective learning experience with people of your own age and ability.
Topics include:
Chords and Chord Progressions
Rudimentary Note Reading
Rhythmic Strumming
Performing in a Group
